The entire purpose of Robert’s Rules of Order is simple: To bring both ORDER and FAIRNESS to a deliberative assembly. When used properly and sometimes when adapted to be more specific for councils and boards, it accomplishes this goal quite handily.
For instance, if a tribe is looking for a way to help ensure the democratic process; to maintain fairness and order; and to make sure that the modern requirements of tribal business are met; and yes, even the continuance of tribal cultural values, Robert’s Rules can help. It should be looked upon for what it is, a set of guidelines to help in the facilitation of fair and impartial meetings; nothing more. If something works, should we ask ourselves why? Or should we just use it? You’ll have to answer that question.
